Six months ago I embarked on a journey to start a podcast. It was a huge win for me because it was a desire in my dream tank for years. Starting the It Matters Podcast has been challenging but life-giving at the same time. The amount of wisdom I have gained from having conversations with leaders has been amazing. The lessons have been many and make me better today.
There have been some practical lessons though that I have learned from simply pursuing a dream. I want to give you five thoughts that I have learned that can be applied in anything you do.
- Dream It
The podcast became a reality because it first lived in my mind. I visualized it and imagined what it could be. The dream created a pull for me and produced passion in me.
- Check It
Have a reality check moment. What do you need to move forward? What skill sets do you need? What resources do you need? Understand the difference between getting started and being an expert in your space.
- Do It
Get started and do something. You can always come up with excuses for why you are not ready and why it might not be the right time. Start small and build. The name of the game is not perfection, but progress and consistency.
- Learn It
Grow as you go. Commit yourself to learning and go on a journey of discovery. Don’t be afraid of failing, because it is part of the process. Be courageous and try new things.
- Keep On It
Be willing to adapt and pivot. How you started doesn’t have to be how you keep it going. Keep up with the times and give your best. Don’t quit and remember why you started in the first place.
Have clarity on your vision and go for it.
Some of you are stuck in time and not maximizing your potential because you’re waiting for the perfect time. The perfect time does not exist. One of the most courageous things we can do is start. It’s difficult to steer a parked car, but when it’s moving it is amazing how smooth it is. Don’t underestimate the momentum and the doors of opportunity that will arise from moving forward.
